The experience of hunger among people experiencing homelessness is devastating cause by food poverty. Sadly, the prolong hunger has been account for worsening the situation of homeless people and also identified as one of the leading causes of death among people experiencing homelessness. Hunger doesn’t need to take anyone life.

Just from last Sunday food supply, a homeless man found half dead due to prolong hunger. And such incidence is not strange nearly every Sunday, at least one homeless person will be found in a similar situation -being in a state of death because of lack of access to proper food. Some hunger forces them to feed from leftover or dustbin just to sustain their lives. Studies already Shown how hunger and malnutrition is a life-threatening issue and homeless people are in high risk even though many ordinary citizens also struggle with food access. It’s more difficult for people experiencing homelessness with the discrimination and lack of support from the mainstream community with no help from the government.

Their situation warrants our service as social workers, with our regular Sunday meal service focus on nutritious food access making a difference, they feel respected and hopeful. The Sunday meal service has its own challenge too- the insufficiency of the food supply due to donation constrains. Imagine with $25 can cover 10 people to access meal both breakfast and lunch with the annual raw rice support from Caritas Freetown and weekly fresh bread support from Red Lion Bakery, a nutritious meal is guarantee for them.
