Get To Know Us
Social Workers Sierra Leone (SWSL) is a private membership-based, non-political, non-religious and not-for-profit organization. Which was established in 2012, in order to support the professional development of social workers within Sierra Leone.
SWSL are also involved in enhancing the quality of life for the people of Sierra Leone, with a focus on vulnerable people and communities.
Our History
Social Workers Sierra Leone (SWSL) was founded by a young social worker named Hassan Koroma, who graduated with a Diploma in Social Work in 2010. At that time social work was perceived as a path for dropouts and a field that required no qualification.
While most graduates in the field chose to succumb to the public’s perception, Koroma perceived social work as a profession and sacrificed his time and efforts to champion local causes. Which showcased social work as a professional career.
Aside from that, the life challenges he encountered also motivated him to stay and uphold social work. Furthermore, Hassan’s child and youth experience is similar to many of the sad stories of Sierra Leonean children and youths, many of whom, due to social norms, forfeit their potential and end up becoming liabilities to society.
He never accepted to be a victim and so went on to establish SWSL, as a way of helping the disadvantaged, voiceless and deprived children and youths.
Since the inception of SWSL, its work has largely been around touching disadvantaged children, youths and by extension the vulnerable populations within Freetown and beyond.
